David Golding pays tribute to Tony Thorpe

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the death of Tony Thorpe, the Nottinghamshire Golf Union President and a great supporter of greenkeeper training especially in his Home County.

Tony's love of golf was legendary but so too was his support to greenkeepers who he truly respected for the work they undertake to maintain courses for the pleasure of so many people.

Tony, a regular visitor to the GTC stand at Harrogate and the Open Championship marquee, loved nothing more than visiting golf clubs with representatives from our colleges if only to encourage youngsters to learn and aim to be a top Course Manager as it is a wonderful job.

Jonathan Knowles (Myerscough College) and Richard Barker (Brooksby College) both will miss his inspirational support and I personally will never forget his never ending support for the work of the GTC.

Our thought are with his family at this very sad time.
