Golf greenkeepers play a vital role in golf course maintenance and management. It’s a rewarding career with a healthy lifestyle, which can take you across the world.
The Greenkeepers Training Committee (GTC) is the industry body set up to promote the career of greenkeeping and to further the ambitions of golf greenkeepers.
It would be your job to achieve the finest playing conditions in the most cost effective way. One week you may be involved in a construction project, or supervising the repair of a complex piece of machinery. The next, your course may be hosting a major tournament such as the Open Championship.
You will be working amongst some of the most beautiful countryside you can imagine.
If the environment is your love, conservation and ecology is at the heart of a greenkeepers role. Flora and fauna (plants and animals) are to be found on golf courses and as a greenkeeper you will be the custodian on the natural environment.
Training courses and qualifications are available to students at all levels to allow ambitious and enthusiastic individuals work towards becoming greenkeeping management professionals.
Vocational training and qualifications are available as are more college-based qualifications. There is something for everybody!
Work based Diplomas and in Scotland Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ’s) have been accepted as the industry standards and are designed to help greenkeeping students gain the skills AND knowledge for use on the golf course.
On the job training is very popular with both trainee greenkeepers and employers.
To support on the job or vocational training, the GTC has produced a comprehensive training manual. Compiled with the backing of the golf industry, the manual has been carefully prepared to support students embarking on a career in greenkeeping.
Education and training courses to complement the vocational qualifications in sports turf are available through a network of GTC Approved Training Providers around Britain.
A Government endorsed Apprenticeship is available embracing the sports turf vocational qualifications and additional employer required skills.
