Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Pesticides

The new statutory Code of Practice for Using Plant Protection Products is a must have tool for greenkeepers. It is packed with guidance that is directly in line with modern greenkeeping practice and is an essential reference for those preparing for NVQs and NPTC Certificates of Competence to use pesticides; it also complements the GTC Training Manual and Learning Materials.

There will be more emphasis in the future on the protection of the aquatic environment. Lakes, ponds and open ditches are increasingly common features on golf courses and this Code emphasises the need to adopt practices that minimise the risk of drift by pesticides. Research shows that even a tiny amount of pesticide can devastate a wide range of microfauna found in our ponds and lakes.

Employers need to be aware that this is a statutory Code of Practice for the use of pesticides in amenity areas - this includes golf courses! What does this mean? Well it is very simple, failure to follow the guidance in this Code can be used as evidence in a prosecution for offences under the Control of Pesticides Regulations.

Who should have a copy? Course Managers/Head Greenkeepers - they will need to make sure they are familiar with this Code – all sections of it. All greenkeepers who have Certificates of Competence to use pesticides must have access to this Code and refer to it as often as they need to in all situations involving pesticides. Student greenkeepers, especially those who will be taking their NPTC Certificates of Competence must have access to a copy too.

Employers will need to make sure that compliance with this Code is included within Golf Course Management and Environmental Policy Documents.
