GTC and IOG unite over training manual for groundsmen

The Greenkeepers Training Committee (GTC) and the IOG have developed a Groundsmans version of the acclaimed GTC Greenkeepers Training Manual. The move complements the GTC and IOG reaching agreement with the Awarding Organisation, City & Guilds, to have the Work-Based Diplomas for Greenkeepers and Groundsmanship include their respective logos on certificates from 1 September.

The new Diplomas have replaced the NVQs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and given the sports turf industries the opportunity to have a stronger influence in the content of the Diplomas as well as a quality assurance in the delivery of the qualifications.

Approved City & Guilds Land Based Services Centres will have access to the manuals for use with sports turf students, and the knowledge which underpins the skills required within the Diplomas is also available through learning materials in hard copy or CD ROM format.

David Golding, GTC's Education Director, believes the agreement between the GTC, IOG and City & Guilds Land Based Services will benefit the sports turf sector employers and learners as the Work Based Diplomas have been designed to give greenkeepers and groundsmen and women the skills and knowledge to maintain surfaces to the highest standards using sustainable best practices.

Ian Lacy, IOG's Head of Professional Services added: "We are delighted to have worked with the GTC to secure this agreement with the City & Guilds Land Based Services.

"In 2006, the IOG launched its six-year strategic Challenging Perceptions plan where a key theme was to identify and establish partnerships, which this agreement achieves. The IOG is committed to promoting the skills agenda to National Governing Bodies of Sport through the new Diplomas and working with the GTC and City & Guilds Land Based Services in this way ensures our message will be heard by the widest audience possible.

David Golding commented: "The GTC is dedicated to ensuring a range of quality qualifications ranging from Work Based through to Foundation Degree are available through a network of Approved Centres, and this close collaboration with the IOG over the Groundsmans Training Manual is the latest example of how seriously and steadfastly we are progressing this theme.

Jack Ward, Chief Executive of City & Guilds Land Based Services, said: " We are delighted to have an agreement with the greenkeeper and groundsmanship bodies. We hope we can lead the way in inspiring other land-based organisations to follow.".
